Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is widening Hwy 271 & the project is expected to be constructed in three phases:
- Phase 1: from FM 16 in Smith County to Loop 485 in Gladewater.
- Phase 2: widening of Loop 485 around the east side of Gladewater to US 80.
- Phase 3: continues widening Loop 485 from US 80 north to US 271 and then along US 271 to the Upshur County line.

Due to this, we must move over 4 miles of waterlines to accommodate the widening of the highway.
Currently the are working on the major road bores. The majority of the new lines have been laid.
Still to be done:
- 4 service line bores
- Test the new lines
- Install taps and transfer meters
- Pull up the old lines
- Clean up, re-seed grass, and fill in any settled dirt
Once the construction on Highway 271 is complete, we will be upgrading the line on CR 374 and CR 366. The part to be upgraded is from Well 1 on Hwy 271, N on CR 374 to CR 366, then W on CR 366 to CR 373(Starnes Loop).
